Newbury Street Rugs heads for the South End

Following the lead of several other furniture stores in the Back Bay area, Newbury Street Rugs is leaving its long-time home on Newbury Street and heading to the emerging furniture hub near the South End.

Solomon Mojtabai, who owns the store with his wife, Nayier, said he's eager to join his counterparts in the South End. If he stays at the 218 Newbury St. location, the rent is expected to double. Even more troubling is the growing problem with parking on Newbury, which can be difficult for a business trying to move huge rugs in and out of the building and into trucks, he said.

While the Newbury Street location helped build the Majtabai's rug business, the couple says its time to move on to a bigger space.

The new space at 240 Stuart St., which will open before July, is about two and half times larger than the 218 Newbury St. location.

"We think we'll do better there," Solomon Mojtabai said. "We will be able to have more variety at the new location."

The couple started the business seven years ago as a hobby. Today, the store sells new and antique rugs from China, Nepal and Turkey.·
