Solomon's - Tabriz
persian rugs
The look: Tabriz
rugs usually have curvilinear design and sophistication in their patterns
to use in fine living room and dining room settings. Some tribal patterns
can also appear in Tabriz pieces.
The general feel for
quality: The quality of Tabriz rugs can vary. The older (before
1945) rugs are very good. Tabriz rugs are highly prized because they
are one of the best looking and best quality handmade rugs in Iran and
the world. Tabriz rugs have been renowned for centuries, where nobles
like King Louis XIV would commission Tabrizi master weavers for elegant
silk and wool rugs appealing for French estates.
Watch out for: Many
lesser-quality rugs from aroung Tabriz are passed along as a Tabriz
rug to unsuspecting customers. Further, some of the newer TABRIZ rugs
can have a lower number of knots per square inch (kpsi) and lower material
quality. Tabrizes are considered highly valuable and museum-quality
when made in the high standard for which they are known.
Shape and style: Tabriz
rugs have different sizes. The majority are mid size (from 4'x6' to
8'x10'). You can also find large rugs up to 10' x 18'. At Solomon's,
you can find the finest Tabriz pieces even up to grand palace-sizes
of 12' x 20' or more.
Color: Some older
Tabriz pieces can come in beige and earth tones, yet most older Tabrizes
usually have dark red and powerful blue colors to predominate, with
the ivory color used in elegant contrast. There are other colors in
newer carpets such as soft green, blue and brown. At Solomon's, you
can even find the finest silk and wool Tabriz pieces made in Napoleanic
pink, blues and ivory to a one-of-a-kind elegant black, gold, and lavender
masterpiece.
Pile texture: Soft
wool, thin, tight piles. An adornation of Persian silk highlights can
be found in finer pieces.
Foundation: The
finest Tabriz pieces are made from a pure silk warp foundation. Tabriz
foundational warps are also of cotton, with their wefts either cotton
or wool. At Solomon's, you can find the finest Tabriz silk foundation
masterpieces.
Solomon's finest sources:
Tabriz, Iran, the capital of the north-western Iran province of Azerbaijan,
has for centuries enjoyed a great reputation as a center of Oriental
culture and the central trading post of the ancient silk route. From
its development from a naturally favored oasis at the foot of the volcano
Sahand, to today's commercial center, and descriptions of its artists
and craftsmen could fill many historical volumes of the past several
millenia.
